"If your stomach still has butterflies when you recall your high-school love, if you've been in a fever over a "bad boy" in a bar at closing time, known what it is to share wedding cake and later divide up the furniture--then chances are you will understand the Men Series, acrylic paintings I am creating that depict the men I have known and loved in my life. I am an artist who paints what I see and live as a woman. I was raped and left for dead at 15, pregnant and married at 17, and widowed, raising two sons, by the age of 24. A dizzying array of relationships have woven themselves throughout my life. I have passionately loved an alcoholic husband, wild-eyed musicians, and angst-ridden artists who put me on pedestals and convinced me I had no value. Despite it all, these relationships are part of me, part of the coarse texture of my life story. They each gave me a gift, and they each essentially changed who I am." cory jaeger-kenat |
