"Two sixth-grade boys are portrayed in this painting. They grimace and make faces at me on the playground blacktop. At the age of eleven, I know with razor-sharp precision that I am not one of the girls with the right clothes and the right face. I have been doing one boy's homework for weeks and the other boy always asks to stay with me at recess to work on the hall bulletin board. They scribble on my notebooks and tease me about my Charlie Brown lunchbox. I am a dandelion in a sea of manicured grass. Strange, the boy in red is the first to tell me I'm not ugly." cjk
