Tasting Glamour Artist Statement Tea for Two Tea for Two #2 Chairman of the Board Starlet Cubism a la Ice and Sugar A Gent and a Dame |
![]() Artist Statement written for Michael's Cafe, Altoona, Pennsylvania, 10/06 "Often, I think that I was born in the wrong time. I'm not really sure what an Ipod is for, and I've never seen an episode of 'Survivor'. But classic old movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood--ah, that's another matter. I've had a crush on Clark Gable since I was eleven years old. Whereas other women might want to dress like the women on "Desperate Housewives", I dream of wearing little hats with veils like Joan Crawford or satin evening gowns like Bette Davis. To me, glamour is telecast in black and white. It curls like smoke from cigarette holders in gloved hands; it gleams from the dashboard of a Packard roadster. Like French perfume, it emanates from Hepburn's rippling laugh and Bogie's trenchcoat. It tastes like a brandy poured from a cut-glass decanter, and it swings like Benny Goodman and the boys. Paint strokes and fine cuisine both can mesmorize with their lusciousness. I wanted to take the delectable one step further, linking it to moments in time, and to movie-star personas. Teacakes for some reason evoke Audrey Hepburn and cups of Earl Grey tea in bone china cups welcome in Sir Lawrence Olivier. The martini waits for Frank Sinatra to finish his set, and the bubbles in the champagne glass are tickling the nose of Marilyn Monroe." |
